True. Also Visio 2010 is pretty nice tool to work with. This is a good thing as it allows more and more users to run BPM initiatives without spending a fortune.

Would you be interested in short web presentation of ADONIS:CE for you?

Best regards,

Zbigniew

Zbigniew, the quality of the Visio add-ons has increased significantly since I wrote this post five years ago - itp-commerce and Trisotech, for example, have Visio add-ins that are much more than just shapes, they provide validity checking and model interchange, so probably compete well with the standalone modeling tools. I'm always interested in looking at new tools, although don't always have the time to write about them.

Hi again Sandy,

As I wrote you on Twitter you made a good point regarding trade-off between functionality of "real BPA tools" and popularity (--> much easier entry to organisation; probably lower cost) of the Visio add-ons.

I even know organisations where processes were modelled as PowerPoint shapes, because they did not want to buy Visio (as a result any update of the process documentation caused some poor soul spend few days moving the shapes).

That's why my company released the ADONIS:Community Edition (http://www.adonis.community.com) - tool aimed at users beginning with BPM, that do not have budget and need easy to use yet powerful tool.

We recently released a new version with BPMN 2.0 support (also for simulation) and many other nice features:
http://www.pr.com/press-release/314518

If you think it could be interested for your readers I will be glad to provide you more details - just let me know.

Best regards,

Zbigniew

Maybe you would like to take a look at ADONIS:Community Edition - free tool with "functionality of the big ones" recently released by BOC Group - company I work for.
It can be found at adonis-community.com

It really comes down to a trade-off between the higher functionality of a modelling tool like ARIS, and the widespread usage of Visio. Until someone comes out with an easy-to-use, nearly-free modelling tool with all the functionality of the big ones, I think that we're stuck with Visio.

I think it is important to take care that when you model a process, don't just draw a graphic but get a lot of company information about each of the activities, decisions etc. For example in tools like ARIS, you can assign a role (and a specific person) to each activity, see which software uses, and what metrics affects.

Most important is that you can reuse processes, activities, roles, because all of them are stored in one central database.

I agree that Visio is common for a lot of people, but the reuse of components may be basic for processes analysis.
