Maybe "cut budget for pricey analyst firms" should be #1 on the list...

"he (Potter) suggests that IT abandon SLA guarantees to the business". Is that right, business abandonment is a way forward strategy? So maybe the business should abandon their SLA's for customers too as a way to trim cost? I like these high on emotion, low on logic solutions. I am pretty amazed by this suggestion and the training item.

One point in his talk that hit me was the "cut training", which to me is the most foolish suggestion of all. He suggests sacrificing the most important aspect - employee knowledge - during the time when more knowledgeable people are needed.

Apart from sending the message "you aren't important, you're just a cog", it leads to a downward skill spiral. Good people can usually find jobs elsewhere, leaving the less trained or simply not-as-good behind. The best are often motivated by continuing to learn in their area of interest.

Like you I agreed with many recommendations. Half of them were common sense that is often uncommon during the panic of cost cutting.

I'm not sure about Neil's qualifications - have you seen him in a kitchen recently?
