Great idea, Scott, although these are computer scientists, so may be a bit squeamish about actually scanning people's brains. :)

They should followup some of these studies with more scientific measurement of thought - ie, MRI's of brain activity while analyzing models or answering questions. This kind of research has been used before to show which parts of the brain are activated by speech (and w/ bilingual speech in particular - to show that the same PART of the brain is used for all language processing - english/spanish/whatever). Would be interesting to see if more complex models fire more stray brain activity that thereby impedes understanding...

(it turns out, somewhat counter-intuitively, less activation in the brain usually denotes a "good thing" as far as cognitive activity goes, rather than more - when things are "confusing" your brain lights up the MRI like a xmas tree - the electrochemical manifestation of information overload - whereas when the brain is comfortable with the task, only very targeted parts of the brain - the exact parts required - light up)...

Steve, I agree: we've solved a lot of the technical problems; the tough ones remaining are human understanding and cultural changes.

Great article showing the complexity of human understanding. To me, this study underscores the greatest business process management challenge -process implementation. It is the process implementation phase that must ensure understanding as well as acceptance and commitment to the process.
